To date, very low numbers of cotton jassids have been detected on cotton in 16 counties. Detection means that at least one adult jassid has been observed on cotton in the county. The recommended threshold for jassids is a mean of 1 per leaf when sampling the 4th main stem leaf below the terminal.
A low number of jassids were identified in a cotton field between Brooklet and Denmark yesterday (Figure 1). They were in very low numbers on edge of field. There is no need to panic, but be observant and notice what is going on in your cotton fields.
I have also been noticing spider mites in many of the cotton fields I have been visiting. There have been a handful of fields that warranted treatment. With the recent rains we want to be sure we protect the new growth that emerges. Keep your eye out for bronzing on the leaves. As the mite numbers increase in the field, leaf curling and twisting will be observed on those plants with the highest populations.
