One of the most important initiatives in the Cotton industry in recent years is the “U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol”. This effort is in response to growing demands by the brands, retailers and consumers of U.S. cotton to identify and verify sustainable practices that are environmentally friendly. Preferred fiber lists have been created among almost all brands and retailers and U.S. cotton is not on most of these lists and risks being shut out of several important markets.

U.S. cotton is among the most sustainable cotton in the world, but we must become better at “telling our story”.  The Cotton Trust Protocol is the industry’s best response to the needs and desires of our customers. For this important effort to be successful, grower participation is critical.

There will be an informational meeting held at the Bulloch County Center for Agriculture on Friday, August 20th at 11:00 am to discuss this program.  There will be a representative from the National Cotton Council to give an overview of the Protocol and to answer questions.  We will break for lunch at noon and then there will be an opportunity for those interested to learn more about the sign-up process.

Please contact the Bulloch County Extension Office at 871-6130 or email by noon on Wednesday, August 18 so appropriate arrangements can be made for lunch.
