Southern corn rust was confirmed today in Mitchell and Tift counties. Dr. Bob Kemerait stated that the corn in the Mitchell County field is well into dent stage and does not need a fungicide application now.  Corn in southern Georgia not at dough stage is vulnerable.  The southern rust does not appear widespread, but could move quickly with current conditions.  Late-planted corn could be affected, but early planted corn should be fine.

As of today southern corn rust has not been identified in the Bulloch County Sentinel Rust Plot located on Michael Smith’s Farm.
