{"id":1729,"date":"2018-08-13T12:03:24","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T16:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/?p=1729"},"modified":"2018-08-13T12:03:24","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T16:03:24","slug":"brooks-county-disease-update-cotton-peanuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/2018\/08\/brooks-county-disease-update-cotton-peanuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooks County Disease Update &#8211; Cotton &amp; Peanuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I have been looking at both cotton &amp; peanut fields with disease symptoms and found many fields exhibiting symptoms of the diseases mentioned below.<\/p>\n<p>Please see UGA Disease Update:\u00a0 Dr. Bob Kemerait<\/p>\n<p>DISEASES of PEANUT:\u00a0 White mold and leaf spot aren&#8217;t breaking lose in every peanut field in Georgia, BUT hot temperatures, high humidity and frequent rains have created near-perfect conditions for the development, spread and, sometimes, explosion of these diseases.\u00a0 Growers need to stay on a good fungicide program, tightening spray intervals where disease is becoming problematic and\/or where there is concern if the crops have received enough drying time after a fungicide was applied.<\/p>\n<p>FOUR COTTON DISEASES:\u00a0 Target spot, areolate mildew, Stemphylium leaf spot, and bacterial blight.<\/p>\n<p>EASY STUFF:<\/p>\n<p>Bacterial blight is present and is affecting yield in some fields.\u00a0 Susceptible varieties will get this disease and losses may occur.\u00a0 THERE IS NOTHING TO BE DONE ABOUT IT NOW. but rather, &#8220;Should we protect the cotton in this field with a fungicide?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We have very very little data on areolate mildew, but from what I do have, I am confident that we can easily control this disease using strobilurin products like Headline or Quadris, or mixed products like Priaxor or Elatus.\u00a0 Proline may work as well but I don&#8217;t have data.<\/p>\n<p>Though we can control areaolate mildew, does it make us any more yield than if we didn&#8217;t control it?\u00a0 When conditions are favorable, areolate mildew can rapidly defoliate a cotton crop.\u00a0 If a grower is withing 3-to-4 weeks of defoliating anyway, I would NOT use a fungicide.\u00a0 If the crop still had 4 or more weeks to go, I would consider weather, yield potential, how much disease is in the field and then decide to spray or not.<a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aerolate-mildewn1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1737\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aerolate-mildewn1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aerolate-mildewn1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aerolate-mildewn1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aerolate-mildewn1-104x138.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aeroate-mildew-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1736\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aeroate-mildew-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aeroate-mildew-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aeroate-mildew-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/brooksag\/files\/2018\/08\/aeroate-mildew-2-104x138.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If areolate mildew, or target spot, is already well-established in the field (i.e. causing significant defoliation, then there is little hope that a fungicide will help.<\/p>\n<p>Target spot is a significant concern this year and is widespread.\u00a0 Not every cotton grower in the state needed to spray a fungicide for target spot, but I encourage growers to carefully consider their options.<\/p>\n<p>Target spot is of particular concern this year because a) the wet and warm conditions are perfect for an explosion of the disease, b) the disease has been found early in many fields, and c) the price of cotton makes protection 100-250 lbs lint\/acre attractive.<\/p>\n<p>I believe the best window of opportunity for managing target spot is from the first week of bloom to the sixth week of bloom.<\/p>\n<p>A little target spot in a crop (meaning scattered spots on lower leaves and no defoliation) during the first week of bloom and favorable weather IS a concern, as it would be at the third week as well.\u00a0 A &#8220;little target spot&#8221; at the 4th-6th week of bloom is much less of a concern.<\/p>\n<p>When a fungicide\u00a0program begins\u00a0as early as the first week of bloom because of the disease situation; a second application may be beneficial two-to three weeks later.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t envision an application, follow-up or otherwise, after the 6th week.<\/p>\n<p>It will be quite difficult to control (impossible?) target spot if there is already significant defoliation in the field before an application is made.\u00a0 If 25-30% of the leaves are already gone, a fungicide likely won&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>THE\u00a0 THREE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS TO MANAGE TARGET SPOT, in order of importance, are 1.\u00a0 TIMING\u00a0 2.\u00a0 COVERAGE\u00a0 3.\u00a0 SELECTION of FUNGICIDE.<\/p>\n<p>Please call me at (229)305-7047 if you have additional questions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I have been looking at both cotton &amp;
