{"id":379,"date":"2019-06-28T14:22:12","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T18:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/benhillcoag\/?p=379"},"modified":"2019-06-28T14:22:12","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T18:22:12","slug":"row-crop-disease-update-plus-southern-corn-rust-in-georgia-fields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/benhillcoag\/2019\/06\/row-crop-disease-update-plus-southern-corn-rust-in-georgia-fields\/","title":{"rendered":"Row Crop Disease Update plus Southern Corn Rust in Georgia Fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Current List of Counties where Southern Corn Rust has been reported<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell (Stripling Plots)<br \/>\nClay<br \/>\nJeff Davis<br \/>\nLaurens<br \/>\nDooly<br \/>\nAtkinson<br \/>\nCoffee<br \/>\nBaker<br \/>\nEarly<\/p>\n<p>I think that is our current list<\/p>\n<p>Our row-crop disease situation is pretty much the same as from my last e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Environmental conditions continue to be favorable for development of fungal diseases; we still have moisture and some afternoon storms and warm temperatures.\u00a0 Such will certainly favor development of white mold and leaf spot on peanuts and continued spread of southern corn rust.<\/li>\n<li>Crop development:\u00a0 all of our crops, and especially peanuts and cotton, are progressing to where they are increasingly vulnerable to disease.\u00a0 A) larger leaf canopies create greater humidity and longer leaf-wetness periods within the canopies, conducive for disease.\u00a0 B) Denser canopy makes getting fungicides to the &#8220;target&#8221; areas more difficult.\u00a0 C.\u00a0 At least for peanuts, growth brings on pegs and limbs along the soil which are vulnerable to attack.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HERE IS WHAT I AM THINKING ABOUT NOW:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Peanuts<\/strong>:\u00a0 white mold, white mold.\u00a0 The conditions are here.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be shy or timid.\u00a0 Leaf spot:\u00a0 much of our crop is at (or beyond) the &#8220;witching hour&#8221; of 30 days after planting.\u00a0 Now is time for leaf spot sprays.\u00a0 If it is very dry, one can safely extend spray intervals.\u00a0 But be smart.\u00a0 NEMATODES:\u00a0 Growers wanting to protect their crop (the pegs and pods especially) from root-knot and lesion nematodes SHOULD apply PROPULSE (13.6 fl oz\/A) or AgLogic (10 lb\/A) to the crop between 45 and 65 days after planting.\u00a0 Remember the &#8220;magic word&#8221; to success:\u00a0 IRRIGATION very very soon after application.\u00a0 If this stuff doesn&#8217;t get into the soil then it doesn&#8217;t matter for nematodes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Corn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not very worried about any diseases other than southern corn rust.\u00a0 We know if is sprinkled across the Coastal Plain.
