Nothing is showing up on the National Hurricane Center map so far for the next 7 days. Please note that this is not at all a sure thing, and not all the models are agreeing on it. If something does develop, it would most likely be a weak low along a frontal boundary that could bring a lot of rain to parts of Georgia, especially SW Georgia. Heavy rain could fall even if a storm is not named. I know some places are relatively dry now so those areas can probably use the rain, although I personally would like the rain to stop for one night since I have tickets to see Paul Simon at Chastain Park in Atlanta tonight. I will be wearing my rain gear for that, just in case. Rain looks like it will fall in Georgia somewhere every day this week and most of you can expect to see multiple rounds of showers over the next few days. Growers should remember that <strong>BAW populations over the last three years have shown resistance to the insecticide active ingredient chlorantraniliprole<\/strong>. This AI is found in a number of popular insecticide products currently on the market. If you have any questions about which insecticide to use for BAW management in peanut, please call your local UGA county Extension agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While scouting for foliage feeding caterpillars, be sure to continue to look for <strong>lesser cornstalk borer (LCB)<\/strong>. This pest can be difficult to find, and it will cause yield loss if infestations exceed threshold. Products containing chlorantraniliprole remain the go-to option for LCB management along with the insect growth regulator novaluron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a final note, there were also a couple calls late last week about potato leafhopper (PLH) and hopper burn. There is no validated threshold for this insect in peanut, and while it can probably cause yield loss, I do not think it generally warrants an insecticide application. Though PLH is not difficult to kill, using broad spectrum insecticides (like pyrethroids) will destroy beneficial insects and can result in the outbreak of secondary pests like mites. This is especially true in non-irrigated fields. Longer, less frequent irrigation events are preferred over short, frequent cycles, as they promote deeper soil moisture and improved root development. A practical schedule is to irrigate for <strong>8 hours every other day<\/strong>. If your orchard receives <strong>more than 1 inch of rainfall<\/strong>, suspend irrigation for approximately <strong>three days<\/strong> before resuming your schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaf tissue samples should be collected by the <strong>end of July<\/strong> to evaluate the orchard&#8217;s nutritional status and guide any necessary fertility adjustments. This is also an excellent opportunity to collect soil samples if they have not yet been taken.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continue scouting for <strong>black pecan aphids<\/strong>. Several orchards in the county have already reached treatment thresholds. In susceptible varieties showing significant feeding injury, consider an application of <strong>ProGibb<\/strong> to help mitigate defoliation and support canopy retention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor nut drop for the characteristic white residue associated with <strong>hickory shuckworm (HSW)<\/strong> infestation. Test baled or unbaled (in field)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Forced Motor Planter Calibration \u2013 <\/strong>at-plant insecticide hopper box calibrations. Potential benefits: increase insecticide application efficacy with the appropriate and effective application of product label and recommended control rate.
