Weather Update from Pam Knox:<\/strong> There is a lot of buzz on social media about the potential for a tropical storm developing in the NE Gulf sometime next weekend or early next week. Nothing is showing up on the National Hurricane Center map so far for the next 7 days. Please note that this is not at all a sure thing, and not all the models are agreeing on it. If something does develop, it would most likely be a weak low along a frontal boundary that could bring a lot of rain to parts of Georgia, especially SW Georgia. Heavy rain could fall even if a storm is not named. I know some places are relatively dry now so those areas can probably use the rain, although I personally would like the rain to stop for one night since I have tickets to see Paul Simon at Chastain Park in Atlanta tonight. I will be wearing my rain gear for that, just in case. Rain looks like it will fall in Georgia somewhere every day this week and most of you can expect to see multiple rounds of showers over the next few days. Good for the plants, not so good if you need a dry interval to do field work or apply chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adult Cotton Jassid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

To date, very low numbers of cotton jassids have been detected
on cotton in 6 counties (Grady, Brooks, Tift, Coffee, Bacon, and Colquitt). Detections mean we have
observed at least one adult jassid on cotton in the county. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southern Corn Rust has been identified in Coffee County Georgia. IF your corn is at the hard dough stage, no fungicide application is needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few pictures from my research plots this week that I thought you might find interesting: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) Here is a recent picture of the tractor\/drone weed control study I am working on with Dr. Wes Porter. I have to admit I have been very surprised at the efficacy with reduced GPA’s. We treated yesterday morning with a combination of Trizenta (clethodim) @ 10 oz\/A + Dual Magnum @ 16 oz\/A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Possible leaf injury from a tank-mix of Excalia @ 4 oz\/A + Chlorothalonil @ 16 oz\/A (8 DAT)? Applied 42 DAP to TifNV-HG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) 2,4-DB injury. This type of injury does not show up 100% of the time after an application of 2,4-DB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beet Army Worm in Georgia: Mark Abney <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beet Army Worms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It is the 13th of July, and I have gotten several reports over the last two weeks about beet armyworm (BAW) infestations in peanut fields in Georgia. Growers should remember that BAW populations over the last three years have shown resistance to the insecticide active ingredient chlorantraniliprole<\/strong>. This AI is found in a number of popular insecticide products currently on the market. If you have any questions about which insecticide to use for BAW management in peanut, please call your local UGA county Extension agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While scouting for foliage feeding caterpillars, be sure to continue to look for lesser cornstalk borer (LCB)<\/strong>. This pest can be difficult to find, and it will cause yield loss if infestations exceed threshold. Products containing chlorantraniliprole remain the go-to option for LCB management along with the insect growth regulator novaluron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a final note, there were also a couple calls late last week about potato leafhopper (PLH) and hopper burn. There is no validated threshold for this insect in peanut, and while it can probably cause yield loss, I do not think it generally warrants an insecticide application. Though PLH is not difficult to kill, using broad spectrum insecticides (like pyrethroids) will destroy beneficial insects and can result in the outbreak of secondary pests like mites. This is especially true in non-irrigated fields. There are no definitive answers to guide the decision to treat PLH, but talking the situation over with your local UGA county Extension agent can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
